Research Task 5-Amie Nelms

White Bits (Jovy), 2002

Genre-Comedy/Social Realism
  • Exterior shot-of house, Dave at door
  • Ambient diegetic sound eg. cars passing house

  • Naturalistic lighting
  • Social environment, at home-context, just got out of shower

  • Long shot duration-maintains reality
  • Costume-woman-wrapped in towel, seductive, partner-dressed in suit, business man
  • Props-house hold items eg. toaster, tea pot, feminine items-flip flops, perfume bottles, underwear, make up brushes, sunglasses etc.

Narrative

  • Equilibrium-Female in shower, partner about to get up, Disruption-Dave at door, asks for female to flash for him for £400, Resolution-she finds out that Dave owed her partner money (£400), and paid her unnecessarily for the extra of flashing him

  • Opening-tracking close ups of feminine objects on floor, camera tilts upwards to shower female silhouette, then cut to reveal woman-long duration shot maintains suspense
  • Ending-twist, comical, ironic

Sound

  • Non diegetic soundtrack-gives light hearted edge to film
  • Diegetic sound-eg. shower, doorbell
  • Ambient diegetic sound- cars passing by when door's open
  • Non diegetic soundtrack when woman flashes-reveal, twinkling, mysterious, risky

  • Dialogue-"white bits" referring to tan lines of female, title

Themes and Issues

  • Males representation-objectify women, persuasive, ladish behaviour, calculating; when asking to be flashed at
  • Female representation-willing to do things for money, perhaps unfaithful to partner, promiscuous? like to take risks for own gain eg. quick glance upstairs before flashes, to make sure partner isn't around

Comments

  • Extremely inspiring opening-loved the close up of objects spread on the floor, tracking shot and reveal of silhouette, then cut to her shouting to partner-could work in a thriller short film, keep audience guessing who it is, hidden identity; social realism-great introduction of character, interesting camerawork

  • Ironic twist at the end I found comical

  • Editing-blur of camera to white to connect scenes was very nice, worked really well connecting wall colours
