Joyride (Gillespie), 1995
Genre-Thriller
- Dark atmosphere created through night time
- Low key lighting/naturalistic lighting
- Iconography-Police, uniforms, police car, crimes/murders, weapon (gun)
- Cross cutting to build suspense
- Wood setting, isolated
- Close ups to show struggle of abducted mans' face
Narrative
- Equilibrium-introduction of electrician, Disruption-man's body laying in road, getting abducted and put into car boot, Resolution-Car thieves and kidnappers eliminated, electrician saved, dies after previously poured petrol on body goes up in flames as they return to the original place where it all began.
- Short narratives tend to engage the audience with quick cuts and fast paced action, maintains suspense and tension from start to finish
Sound
- Diegetic high pitched eerie soundtrack used to create suspense, floats in and out, usually appears again when somethings about to happen
- Uses diegetic on-screen sound
- Uses diegetic off-screen sound-to create the audience to visualise their own interpretation of the actions related to the sound eg. the killing of the police officers from the point of view of the electrician in the boot, the scream of the policewoman, banging of bodies etc.
- Sound is used to show/narrate actions without showing it
- Ambient sounds to give realistic quality
Themes and Issues
- Crime-criminals and victim, murder, police (including their iconography)
- Misjustice/mistaken identity-electrician man being accused as one of the criminals when in the woods when the police catch up with them
- Irony-electrician dies at end after stating he will finish the job later on at beginning of short film, perhaps his own fault, twist
- Story comes full circle-begins and end at same place
- Victim-sympathy towards him created through close ups and extreme close ups of face eg. whilst in boot, him dying unwillingly at the end, just an innocent person who gets caught out-could happen to anyone
- Criminals-wearing black (stereotype), violent, sly/intelligent-in laying in the road, fooling victim, distinguish between antagonist and protagonist
- Audience is positioned towards police and victim as they are trying to stop the criminals, dying just for doing their jobs
Comments
- Inspired by clever combination of on and off-screen diegetic sound-could bring to own short film as it doesn't need to show gory effects-cheaper
- The twist at end, irony, adds a humorous element
- Beginning and ending of film in same place-subtle connection which is interesting and intelligent, would like to incorporate something similar perhaps-changing narrative structure perhaps of film
- Constant use of close up and extreme close up on face-portrays emotions clearly which will definitely use in own short film, however maybe use a wider variety of shots, making it more abstract and interesting
