Research Task 4- Jo White

Conversation piece (Turner) 2009

Genre: Social Realism/Comedy

  • Extreme close up of the clock
  • Hand-held camera used at the start
  • Short takes
  • Short cuts between each new shot of the different objects
  • An extreme close up of the man's face is used
  • The camera Pan's down as the man picks out some toast from his shirt pocket
  • The camera stays steady as the audience gets to watch him eating the toast
  • (this is almost as if we the audience are just observing the action)
  • Music is used as a type of communication between the couple.
  • A Low angled shot is used to show the man gluing the vase back together.
  • Mise en scene is used very well in this sequence as all the props are really important to the storyline.
  • Lighting used would be some natural lighting, but i think some lighting has been used as well as the natural light coming in from the window.
  • Another key idea within this film is the characters used, as the situation the characters find themselves in is very real, and viewers would be able to identify with the situation that the man finds himself being blamed for. (breaking of the vase)
  • And the women automatically blaming him for it (because he must have done it?!)
  • This film uses a very unique style that i don't think has been done many times before, the use of sound in this short film is amazing and very unique.
  • The use of the music with different tones for the female (more high pitched) and the lower tone for the male works really well and almost adds the comedy to the film.
  • This use of sound being used as the voices is very inspiring as it really makes you think outside the box with how you can make a simple storyline suddenly have that unique factor about it.
  • The advantages of using this narrative as a short story is very effective, as i don't believe it would feel so inspiring if the film was any longer, as the narrative seems to explain itself quickly to the audience.
  • The structure has a very clear beginning, middle and end. this keeps the audience interested.
  • The film seems to be about a male character that really just wants to be left along sitting in his lounge, so that he can read the paper, however his wife has other ideas.
  • She notices that her vase is broken and so she asks him about it, and if he broke it..and he said no, but then at the end the audience finds out that he did in fact brake it, and at the end he glues it back together.
