Genre- Social Realism/comedy
- Hand held camera-natural shake
- Naturalistic lighting
- Props-everyday, daily routine eg. paper, toast
- House interior setting
- Costume and make up appropriate to context, within the home
- Extreme close ups and close ups to keep audience guessing what objects are
- Depth of field-man sitting out of focus, then vase in focus-emphasise she's putting vase down/reverse, to emphasise man's talking
- 'Conversation Piece'-could be the vase, music, or the short film
Narrative
- Equilibrium-showing rooms of house, introducing characters, Disruption-broken vase, Resolution-man fixes vase after wife tells him to
- Opening and ending-silence, just clock ticking-highlights relationship of music and dialogue
Sound
- Diegetic soundtrack-acting as soundbridge throughout
- Lack of dialogue, music replacing and representing dialogue
- Music tone, pitch and length replicates mood and emotion of characters eg. when woman got upset, whiny trumpet/brass section
- Diegetic clock ticking sound- emphasises silence
- Characters adopt different tones within music to distinguish who's talking, supported by the character speaking being the subject of the camerawork
Themes and Issues
- Males representation-males procrastinate, lazy, slouchy-sitting around at home in robe, pulling toast out of pocket
- Females- can use sexuality to persuade males to do something/carry out job eg. fixing vase; emotional/sensitive eg. crying; females 'nag' men-eg. to fix vase
Comments
- Interesting use of camerawork-camera follows record on turntable, then joins it in circular movement.
- Range of shots-close ups and extreme close up to create suspense, find out what's happening
- Inspiring use of sound-fits extremely well, makes film interesting, keeps audience entertained, without music would be change tone of short film
