Research Task 2- Jo White

Mix Tape (Luke Snellin) 2009

Genre: Social Realism.

  • An extreme close up of a tape is in the frame.

  • The sound of a tape starting up can be heard. This is Diegetic sound.

  • The use of the tape cover, extreme close up.

  • Camera tilts down and an insert from the tape is in the middle of the frame.

  • Background music is used- Diegetic.

  • In the following shot the camera is behind the boy, slowly zooming in towards him,

  • The next shot the camera is in front of him.

  • A medium close up of the tape player and the tape going into the case is used.

  • Diegetic sound is used again as the audience hears the cassette tape shut.

  • Non Diegetic sound kicks in as he closes the door to his house,

  • A medium close up shot is shown of the boy

  • The following shot is interesting as it is slowed right down as the boy turns away from his door and towards the camera.

  • Establishing shot is shown of the two houses.

  • As the boy presses next doors bell the music stops, this is a great use of match on action.

  • Shot reverse shot is used to convey the women next door and the boys conversation about her daughter "Lily" not being home.

  • A Mid shot of the two is used.

  • In the next shot the camera tracks out as the boy reads his newspaper. And diegetic music is used again.

  • At this point the boy realises that Lily is home and playing the tape he made for her.

  • An out of focus shot is used, a medium close up of the picture on wall is shown as it moves, this represents how loud the music is.

  • The next shot is a birds eye view shot of the girl singing too the music. - Diegetic sound.

  • The camera tracks back out on the boy.

  • And then pans up and down as both the characters dance and jump up and down to the music.

  • Next the screen splits and the audience can see both characters in the shot and it ends with both characters smiling.

  • This short film uses music in a unique way, it not only is the main theme of the film, but also the way in which is it played, really brings together the storyline, which is interesting as adding music to a short film like this can be really difficult and it seems to be hard to get the balance right, but somehow this short film has managed it.
  • The advantages of using the short film format within this film, is that it keeps the storyline very simple, but it still contains a beginning, middle, and end. And the story that is conveyed is a good one, and seems to be a very unique idea. This idea is very appealing for my own planning, as the idea is very simple but the technique created is very good.
  • The sort film has been carefully edited, and this is clear to see when the boy presses next doors bell, and then music stops at that exact point. Planning is obvious, and i think this is a key idea.
  • The film is about a boy who likes listening to his dad's old music, and tapes them for him and the girl next door, (who he likes) the boy goes next door to see the girl and give her the mix tape, but she's not home so he goes back home, and then suddenly music is played and the boy realises the girl is playing the tape, and they both jump around and dance to the music, and then it ends with a split screen and them both sitting down against the wall. The representation of characters are that both of the characters are nice, and friendly and the audience is suppose to like them both.
