The Evaluation Question 2 (Part 1)- Emma Robertson

How effective is the combination of your main product and your ancillary tasks?

We had to make sure our film, poster and review targeted our audience (16-24 year old females).

Firstly, I gathered some research about film marketing and why it is so crucial in the industry:

The distributors are responsible for film promotion in the film industry. Distributor is the highly competitive business of launching and sustaining films in the market place. They try and create a 'want to see' buzz through the poster.

Marketing plan

Who? What? Where? When? How?

TO

Strategies to motivate audience's awareness/interest in the film

TO

Creative methods regarding Media, Publicity, Promotions, Online and Partnerships.= their interest should peak as it opens in the cinema.

Here is a really important website, which we used concerning the marketing of a film: http://www.launchingfilms.tv/marketing.php

We watched a series of interviews and made notes, which we could apply to our film poster, blog research and review (where applicable).

We researched into many posters and realised that the power of colour was really important when targeting our audience.

We felt that the ‘Edge of Love’ (2008) poster was significant in our poster research as the friendship between these characters was shown by simply lying on the wooden floor. Also, we copied the use of high key lighting as Miller’s and Knightley’s faces look beautiful, picturesque and porcelain-like.

Themes/Issues

Romance shown through:

Main image: Rich leaning over Amie and Amie looking directly at audience.
Target audience may be able to relate from being in a relationship

Reviewers, Rating and Quotes: ‘Ultimate Summer Romance’- Glamour and ‘A must see tear jerker’- Cosmopolitan. Cosmopolitan and Glamour are the leading women’s magazines so therefore we used them to quote on our film to target the 16-24 year old audience. Plus, the lexical choices ‘Romance’ and ‘Tear Jerker’ hint at the romantic theme.

Tagline: ‘The Boy. The Girl. The Letter’ This hints at the narrative involving the two characters and their relationship towards each other.

Release date: 06.08.2010: During the summer holidays, this targets our audience as students are off of college and university. However, we did recognize that the summer is usually when the big Hollywood blockbusters release as well.

12A Certificate (http://www.bbfc.co.uk/#) and website address: Also target our audience from restricting young children to see our film (which would turn off some teenagers) and using the technology as many teenagers now use the internet to watch trailers etc

Mostly all girl cast and crew shown in cast list

Fantasy shown through:

Use of colours- Green, Black, White, Orange, Peach- summer colours- looks a happy romantic film

Brightness in the image- looks like the characters are in heaven and surrounded by a surreal world.

High Key lighting- shown on the characters’ bodies

By using these certain genres, we were able to mould our characters, Rich and Amie, into role models for our target audience.

  • Rich being a ‘heartthrob’ for girls
  • Amie being ‘Miss Independent’ and the main character, which our target audience can inspire to be like.
