I decided to research into our chosen genre to find out the conventions and the deeper meanings regarding representation and the audience. Questions such as why is Social realism important and what does it stand for towards audiences were the main question I wanted answered. I want to apply this knowledge when we start filming in a week's time.
BFI website: Social Realism
http://www.screenonline.org.uk/film/id/1037898/index.html
- Pushes boundaries to put the experience of real Britons on the screen
- Reflects and reinforces society's norms, values and thoughts about certain topics
- Example of themes: Relationships/Unemployment/Social protest/Education
- Can be controversial
- Have borrow the conventions from documentary film making
- Release from tension
- Emotional indulgence
- Values of humanity
- British 'auteurs' like Karel Reisz, Tony Richardson and John Schlesinger dealt with themes such as abortion, alienation and relationship problems, the poor and depressed
- Addressed issues around masculinity
